The hard masses containing minerals that are formed in the renal tracts are called renal stones. The mechanism of formation of renal stones which are very common in the society is not known. However, genetic susceptibility is a very important factor in stone formation. Renal stones are three times more common in men and the treatment of this condition is performed with closed endoscopic operations in Urology Clinic of Nişantaşı Hospital.
Closed Ureter Diagnosis and Treatment – Ureterolithotripsy (URS)
Ureterolithotripsy is known as the treatment method applied for urinary tract stones located between the kidney and bladder. In these surgeries which are performed with general or spinal anaesthesia in an operation room environment, stone is removed from the body by first entering the bladder and then the ureter via devices called “Ureterorenoscope” withot any incision. Patient can go back to his/her normal life within one day after the operation.
Endoscopic Renal Diagnosis and Treatment – Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL)
PCNL is generally used in the treatment of renal stones of 2 cm and more. A piece of pipe is placed through a kidney-length incision of 1 cm on the skin into the kidney via some special devices. The stone in the kidney can be viewed on a monitor with video system via an optic device. The stone is broken with laser and removed from the body via forceps. With this method, the healing process is much faster compared to open kidney operations and the patient can do normal daily activities in a very short time like two days.
Flexible Ureterorenoscopic Lithotrypsy
It is a treatment method used for the stones that cannot be reached with normal ureterorenoscope. This method is performed under general anaesthesia in the operation room conditions and the stone is removed with special coiling devices by first entering the bladder and then the kidney without any incision or hole. The patient can be discharged and go back to normal daily life within one day after the operation.

Patients are generally followed with medication. When surgical intervention is necessary, the urologists in Nişantaşı Hospital perform operations with “TUR-P” technique.
Familial susceptibility has an important role in renal, prostate and bladder cancers. It is recommended for individuals with a history of these cancers in the family to have regular controls. After diagnosis, treatment is performed with laporosopic surgery or open surgery in the Urology Clinic of Nişantasşı Hospital according to the type of cancer.
